Sons of the Clouds - The Last Colony: Stilles Leid in der Westsahara

In der Westsahara, welche zu einem Teil den Staat Demokratische Arabische Republik Sahara umfasst, zum anderen von Marokko besetzt ist, wird seit mehr als 35 Jahren ein Konflikt ausgetragen, bei dem regelmäßig Menschen vertrieben, verschleppt, gefoltert und teilweise bei den Auseinandersetzungen getötet werden.

Die aktuelle Dokumentation Sons of the Clouds: The Last Colony zeigt den Schauspieler Javier Bardem, wie er sich für die Betroffenen des Westsaharakonflikts einsetzt und vor Ort einen Zugang zum Leben der Menschen sucht:



Auszug aus einem Interview der kanadischen Zeitung The Star mit dem Regisseur des Films, Alvaro Longoria, und Javier Bardem:

Question: You say in the film that Spaniards would react much more strongly than the Sahrawi do, if they were in the same situation. Why have the Sahrawi accepted their plight so peacefully?

Bardem: I don’t know, but they have that in their own nature. It's something when you go to the refugee camps and talk to them and see how they react. They are like that. I don't know the reason.

Longoria: Well, maybe it's a position where the culture is a very honourable culture, no? They believe the right thing will happen and they're trying to prove it can be like that. If they go back to war, they're very few. It would be a disaster. They would be destroyed.

B: The thing is new generations are rising, as we say in the movie. People have been born in refugee camps and they are getting tired of that. It will be a bloodbath if that happens.

Q. There’s a hopeful note at the end of the film that the U.S. and the UN are going to try to use sanctions against Morocco to try to get some action. Are you hopeful that the tide is turning?

B: Well, I think it’s come to a point, this very moment, where things should be taken seriously by people who can really make a difference about it … Because otherwise, it will be one of the tales that happen every day in the news, where people are killed and bombed and destroyed (by terrorism).

Eigentlich sollten beide Seiten des Konflikts zu Wort kommen, allerdings weigerten sich marokkanische Offizielle mit den Filmemachern zu sprechen:

For three years, Bardem and Longoria worked on the film, piecing together old footage ("A lot of material came from the Internet," Longoria said, while adding that the difficult part was securing the rights) with new interviews. Unfortunately, while the pair tried to give "Sons of the Clouds" a proper balance, Moroccan officials refused to cooperate.

Eine Kritik von Variety nimmt den Film gemischt auf. Einerseits stellt er eine längst überfällige Auseinandersetzung dar, andererseits kämen manche Aspekte etwas zu kurz. Bardem konnte im Zuge der Veröffentlichung aber auch vor dem Europa-Parlament sprechen und für sein Anliegen werben. 

Die Gefahr, dass zu viele längst bekannte Fakten präsentiert und bestimmte Themen dafür ausgeblendet werden, sollte jedoch angesichts der andauernden Nichtbeachtung des Konflikts für die meisten Zuschauer kaum vorhanden sein.
