Perspektiven nach dem Abzug: Irans Rolle in Afghanistan

Ein aktuelles Paper des schwedischen Friedensforschungsinstituts SIPRI beschäftigt sich mit der Rolle Irans in Afghanistan und den Perspektiven dieses Engagements. Ein wohltuend unaufgeregter Blick auf die Afghanistan-Politik der Regionalmacht und eine Möglichkeit sich mit der Rolle des Landes abseits vom Atomstreit zu beschäftigen.

Die Studie des Wissenschaftlers Bruce Koepke kommt unter anderem zu dem Schluss:

Given the convergence of their interests in a stable and secure Afghanistan, the Iranian and US governments have the opportunity for cooperation during the forthcoming transformation period. Engagement with Iran on Afghanistan is perhaps more important now than it was in 2001 as Iran has since successfully consolidated its strategic depth and secured considerable political, economic and social influence in a significant portion of Afghanistan.

Zudem wird die Frage aufgeworfen, welche Alternativen zu der engen Kooperation mit Pakistan die USA in der Region haben, da innerhalb dieser Beziehung bisher kaum langfristige Strategien umgesetzt werden konnten. Eine konstruktive Einbindung Irans könnte außerdem neue Optionen für weitere Gespräche zu anderen Themen aufzeigen.

Iran, with its breadth of experience in Afghanistan and long support for the reconstruction and stabilization of Afghanistan, could continue to play a constructive role after the withdrawal of international forces in 2014. In this report the author details the evolution of Iran's policy of strategic pragmatism in Afghanistan. Understanding this policy could provide an opportunity for the international community to re-engage with Iran on a broad range of issues of mutual concern.
